A RARE BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK AT HAIR AND MAKE UP WITH BRIAN C. HAWKINS

For the ANNE BOWEN BRIDAL COLLECTION Fall 2012 runway presentation, we collaborated with the uber-talented Brian C. Hawkins and his amazing team for hair and make-up. The theme for the collection was “The Language of Love”, and the transformation from mere runway models into romantic icons was extraordinary. We asked Brian to provide readers with rare insight as to what really happens backstage in terms of hair and make-up and how they created those iconic looks.

The hair, created using products by Paul Mitchell, had a Veronica Lake meets Anne Hathaway vibe. (Vintage meets modern woman). Waved polished hair was the overall look on the models. However, some hair was side swept, some had a textured bun, and some were completely down and sleek. The hair was prepped with Paul Mitchell’s Awapuhi with Ginger Texturizing Sea Salt spray to create texture and hold, Super Skinny Balm for the sleek and shine for the hair as it was curled, pinned, and then brushed out to create the waves. Lastly, the hair was sprayed with Hold Me Tight for hold and shine.

The Make Up provided by Mirabella Beauty was all about fresh skin with a deep, dark smoky eye, light color on the cheeks paired with a soft yet glossy lip. The look very much complimented the hair and romantic look of the gowns. The smoky eye was created with brown base color “Bark” and then smudged out with “Sienna” with a touch of “Ultraviolet” in the crease then highlighted with “Stella”. A double application of mascara was applied on the upper and lower lids. On the cheeks, the”Glowing” blush duo was used for a pop of color and contour. The lip were created using “Honeysuckle” with a clear gloss added over. As the final touch, “Prime for face and eyes” was used as the pre-prep before foundation and powder for an overall soft appeal.

Special thank you to Paul Mitchell and Mirabella Beauty.

FUTURISTIC NOMAD: THE DEBUT OF THE BOWEN COLLECTION

Fashion is truly a crazy business where designers are forced to reinvent themselves twice a year with runway shows during New York Fashion Week. The staff at ANNE BOWEN must be certifiably insane because we create and produce four fashion shows a year for both bridal and ready to wear. This collection is entitled “FUTURISTIC NOMAD”. Check it out.

On Thursday September 8th, designer Anne Bowen will debut the BOWEN COLLECTION at the Manhattan Movement and Arts Center during New York Fashion Week. The BOWEN COLLECTION takes its inspiration from the vision of a global futuristic nomad. “By designing under the BOWEN label, I feel we can push our creative boundaries and transcend the limits of our culture with more freedom,” says Bowen. Our culture has forever changed, and we are now truly a global economy in which individuals are more globally connected than ever before. As such, this new collection will provide a way of dressing that incorporates elements of the future while referencing the heritage of many cultures thus fusing an elegant nature with rough textures and unexpected finishes.

Textured hand-dyed silk chiffons, chevron patterns woven into textiles and embroideries, light weight woolens, laser Byzantine mosaic cutouts on suede and distressed silk charmeuse are all featured in this collection. Silhouettes with low backs, fitted skirts, and body caressing dresses which look effortless to wear create Bowen’s vision of the global nomadic woman.

Bowen explains that “by personally draping the garments, I feel more of what I want to say comes through in the final product.” Embellishments including tarnished metal sequins, crystals, and embroidery are used to create a multicultural design. The BOWEN COLLECTION juxtaposes elements of ancient cultures with the futuristic vision of tomorrow.
